Irish Wheaten Bread
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp salt
- 6 tbsp butter
- 1¾ cup buttermilk
- Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Add butter and cut it into the dry ingredients with a fork or pastry cutter until well combined
- Slowly add the buttermilk until a nice dough forms (it might not require all of it!)
- Knead a few times and shape into a nice bread round.
- With a sharp knife, cut an X across the top about half an inch deep.
- Now bake in a 350° oven for about 45 minutes.
- When the bread is done, it will have a nice brown color, sound hollow when tapped, and if you insert a skewer into it, it will come out clean.
- Let cool on a wire rack if you are able to resist.
Enjoy with butter, cheese, honey or just dunked in a nice bowl of soup.
